Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta)

Bluebells are found throughout Scotland in deciduous woodlands or open areas which are shaded by bracken in summer. In spring their highly scented, blue/violet, bell-like flowers create carpets of vivid blue. Grows up to 40cm.

Bluebell seeds need exposure to cold to germinate. Sow in autumn directly onto a fine-raked seed bed, firming down well, in which case germination can be expected in the spring, or sow in a tray of damp compost. Put the tray inside a sealed plastic bag in the fridge for 12 weeks then leave outside, ensuring the tray does not dry out. Plants mature slowly while they form bulbs & will flower after several years.

We collect Bluebell seed Bluebell seed under Scottish Government licence.
