Heather (Calluna vulgaris)

Heather is a bushy shrub that dominates much of Scotland’s mountain & moorland. In August & September it produces abundant, small pinkish-purple flowers loved by honeybees and wild bees like bumblebees. Heather has many traditional uses including medicine, dying, thatching, bedding and flavouring beer. Up to 60cm tall.

Sowing:  Heather seeds need cold to germinate. Sow onto a tray of damp compost in autumn, leaving outside or in an unheated greenhouse over winter or sow in compost in a tray in spring, put the tray in a plastic bag in the fridge for 6-8 weeks then transfer to a warm place. Transplant seedlings into an open site with acidic or lightly acidic soil.  Keep young plants watered & weeded.
