Nottingham Catchfly (Silene nutans)

Nottingham Catchfly is a rare plant in Scotland, occurring on dry calcareous coastal grassland. It’s most northerly site is the wonderful St Cyrus Nature Reserve in Aberdeenshire.

A perennial plant with long elegant, often reddish, stems and delicate drooping sticky night-scented pale flowers that attract insects and, as a result, bats.

Sowing: Can be sown at any time of year, but best in early autumn or in spring. Choose a sunny open site with a light dry soil, or grow in a container. Scatter the seed directly onto a fine raked seed bed, firming down well, or sow in trays and transplant seedlings when large enough to handle. Water well and keep young plants weeded.
