Primrose (Primula vulgaris)
Usually the first flower of the year, Primroses or Spinkies as they are also known, are found in woods & open grassy places throughout Scotland. They form low clumps of crinkled green leaves with pale, butter-yellow flowers in January to May which are a vital source of pollen & nectar in early spring.
Sowing: Primrose seeds need a period of cold to grow. Sow outside in autumn into a fine raked seed bed, firming down well for germination the next spring or sow at any time of year onto a tray of damp compost, put the tray in a fridge for 6 – 8 weeks then move to somewhere warm until seedlings appear. Transplant seedlings outside when big enough to handle & keep young plants watered & weeded.
50-150 seeds per packet.
