Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis)

A perennial of dry, sunny pastures, Field Scabious is most common in the South and East of Scotland. Heads of lilac-blue flowers appear in mid to late summer and are popular with insects like bees and in particular butterflies. After flowering the seed heads are a favourite of seed-eating birds like goldfinches. Up to 100cm tall.

Sowing:Can be sown at any time of year, but best in early autumn or in spring. Sow in trays or pots of moist compost and transplant to a sunny site, or sow directly at the site on the surface of a finely prepared seed bed pressing down lightly. Water  well and keep young plants weeded.
