Maiden Pink (Dianthus deltoides)

This small, perennial wildflower, popular with bees & butterflies, grows on dry, lime-rich grassy banks & sand dunes in south-east Scotland. Its tiny, intense pink flowers have the serrated petal edges typical of the Dianthus family, which gives its name to the pattern of ‘pinking’ shears. The flowers grow on stems of about 30 cm above rounded cushions of narrow leaves in mid to late summer.

Sowing:  Can be sown at any time of year, but best in early autumn or in spring. Sow in trays or pots of moist compost & transplant to a well-drained, sunny site. Water well & keep young plants weeded. Can also be used as a container plant.
