Marsh Woundwort (Stachys palustris)
Marsh Woundwort, also known in Scots as Maskert or Hound’s Tongue, is a striking flower found throughout Scotland in damp places in sun or light shade. It is a traditional medicinal, edible and dye making herb. A perennial with reddish-pink flower spikes up to 1m tall it is also a favourite of bumblebees.
Sowing: Can be sown at any time of year, but best in early autumn or in spring. Sow in trays or pots of moist compost and transplant to an open or lightly shaded site that does not dry out in summer, or scatter seed directly onto a fine-raked seed bed, firming down well. Water well and keep young plants weeded.
