Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria)

Meadowsweet has many traditional uses, including treating fevers & flavouring mead. The Gaelic name comes from the story of the warrior Chuchulainn’s use of the plant to cure feverous rages. Common throughout Scotland in damp meadows, ditches & riverbanks, this sweetly scented perennial has red stems & abundant white flowers in July and August. Grows up to 100 cm tall.

Sowing: Can be sown at any time of year, but best in early autumn or in spring. Sow in trays or pots of moist compost & transplant to an open or lightly shaded, damp site or scatter the seed directly onto a fine-raked seed bed & firm down well. Water well & keep young plants weeded. 200-500 seeds per packet.
